{"id":13546,"date":"2018-06-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-09T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashpack.preview.uk.com\/2018\/06\/10\/can-being-single-help-you-live-longer\/"},"modified":"2023-08-01T09:44:04","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T08:44:04","slug":"can-being-single-help-you-live-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.flashpack.com\/us\/solo\/wellness\/can-being-single-help-you-live-longer\/","title":{"rendered":"Can being single help you live longer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who&#8217;s ever been single in their 30s and 40s will be familiar with the titled head gaze.<\/p>\n<p>The domain of well-meaning relatives, this time-honoured gesture is often accompanied by the words, &#8220;Shouldn&#8217;t you be settling down by now?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Side note &#8211; never feel obliged to do anything that starts with <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/wellness\/travelling-alone-stress-less\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the word &#8220;should&#8221;<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13552\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/bridget-jones-4.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"3600\" height=\"2398\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What these people fail to understand is that marriage is no longer an elixir for happiness. In fact, it never was.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just that now, with more of us <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/more-people-than-ever-before-are-single-and-thats-a-good-thing-74658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">living single<\/a> than ever before, we&#8217;ve finally getting wise to the fallacy of the Bridget Jones stereotype.<\/p>\n<p>Being single does not make you sad and hankering after love. To the contrary, it may be the key to a long and joyous life. Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reaching a ripe old age<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12653\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/old-friends.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The exact impact of being single on longevity has yet to be studied in detail, mainly because of a historic &#8211; and arguably exaggerated &#8211; analytical bias towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/living-single\/201610\/is-there-bias-against-single-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benefits of marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But anecdotally, a surprising number of the world&#8217;s oldest people credit their vitality to being single.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/single-woman-traded-love-lifelong-travel\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meet the woman, 74, who traded love for lifelong travel<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whenever anyone asks\u00a0Madeline Dye, a 106-year-old woman living in Yorkshire, about whether she has a husband (yes it still happens, even to centenarians),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/life\/966049\/woman-106-years-old-relationship-single-long-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she replies<\/a>, &#8220;I&#8217;ve never had one, that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m this age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She says she has not had the stresses of marriage,&#8221; adds Madeline&#8217;s niece, Diana Heaton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/sicily-small-group-tour-solo-travellers\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12867\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Sicily-Shutterstock-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s Emma Morano of Verbania, Italy, who lived to 117 years old &#8211; making her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/worlds-oldest-woman-said-secret-to-long-life-is-staying-single_us_5735eb09e4b060aa781a1429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the oldest<\/a> documented person in the world before her death last year.<\/p>\n<p>Like Madeline, Emma credited her vigorous health to being single; she left an unhappy marriage in 1938 and flew solo ever since. Despite a slew of suitors, &#8220;I didn\u2019t want to be dominated by anyone&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The world&#8217;s &#8220;super-solo&#8221; societies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11756 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/woman-japan-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s no coincidence <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/solo-travel-guide-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that Japan<\/a>, which famously holds the world&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health-fitness\/body\/secret-japanese-longevity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highest life expectancy<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0is on-course to become a &#8220;super-solo society&#8221; of 50%\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/japantoday.com\/category\/features\/kuchikomi\/by-2035-half-of-japanese-will-be-single-predicts-commentator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly Sweden, currently the world&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/relationships\/sweden-solo-living-single\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single living capital<\/a>,\u00a0 also boasts one of the highest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20110317\/32658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">life expectancy rates<\/a> in the world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13225 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/man-alone-Sweden.jpg\" alt=\"single living\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Longevity in both countries is often attributed to factors such as a prevalent fish diet and close community ties.<\/p>\n<p>But, at a time when we are only just skirting the surface of what it means to live single, could living single play a role, too?<\/p>\n<p>And if so, *how* do the unique lifestyle factors of singledom impact on a longer life?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consistency is key<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13548\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Singles_Holidays_solo_Vacation.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2800\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Psychologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belladepaulo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bella DePaulo<\/a>\u00a0has spent years studying single life, and often points to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dataverse.harvard.edu\/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=hdl:1902.1\/00882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terman Life-Cycle Study<\/a>\u00a0to refute the stereotype that marriage helps you live longer.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most thorough longitudinal studies into longevity ever to have been conducted, this vast body of research followed the lifecycle of subjects from 1922 through to 1986.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/relationships\/women-happier-single-men\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why women revel in the ritual of being single<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of the 1,528 people studied, it found two distinct groups lived longest: people who stayed married and people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/living-single\/200902\/no-getting-married-does-not-make-you-live-longer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who stayed single<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who divorced, or who divorced and remarried, had shorter lives,&#8221; Bella writes, in Psychology Today. &#8220;What mattered was consistency, not marriage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The results were the same for the men and the women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/jordan-adventure-holiday-for-solo-travellers-aged-30-40\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13164\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/010c7d36-c04d-46e1-a35b-9a4c0171d169-1.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given we are conditioned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/the-truisms-wellness\/201701\/why-we-resist-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resist change<\/a> of any kind &#8211; and divorce is one of life&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/contemplating-divorce\/201207\/where-are-you-the-divorce-stress-scale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most stressful events<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; this is perhaps not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t forget, this study was conducted a long time ago, when it was less socially acceptable to live single; and simultaneously, we knew less about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/wellness\/spending-time-alone\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why spending time alone makes us happy<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are now a few important reasons why living single may bring even greater longevity and happiness than marriage &#8211; divorce or no..<\/p>\n<p><strong>The social factor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12148\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/sri-lanka-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2448\" height=\"1632\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having a strong network around you is not just a &#8220;nice to have&#8221; in life &#8211; it&#8217;s critical to health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Just as loneliness can be as bad for your health as smoking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/health-and-medicine\/loneliness-is-as-bad-for-your-health-as-smoking-15-cigarettes-a-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 cigarettes a day<\/a>, so people with strong social relationships can increase their chances of survival by up to 50% over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/6769-live-longer-friends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a long-term period<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching out to those around you &#8211; friends, family, neighbours, strangers on the road &#8211; will prolong your life.<\/p>\n<p>And single people are more likely to instinctively fulfill this need.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11193\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Paraty-SUP2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2800\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A 2016 study from Boston College and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0265407515597564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Massachusetts<\/a>\u00a0found that single people<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0265407515597564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0are more sociable<\/a>\u00a0than their married counterparts, and more likely to reach out to those around them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Single individuals are more likely to frequently stay in touch with, provide help to, and receive help from parents, siblings, neighbours, and friends than the married,&#8221; the researchers conclude. &#8220;Being single increases the social connections of both women and men.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Married people, by contrast, have a greater tendency to be insular (as anyone who has ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2015\/nov\/24\/sue-perkins-friends-relationships-mel-giedroyc-married\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost a friend<\/a> to a new relationship knows well).<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re single, you&#8217;re more likely to reap the serotonin boost that comes with everyday social interactions.<\/p>\n<p>And this holds a profoundly positive impact on life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The power of autonomy\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13191\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/man-travel-alone-1.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"2700\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s turn now to a close neighbour of strong relationships: happiness.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that happiness not only leads to a higher quality of life, it can also <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2011\/10\/31\/health\/happiness-linked-longer-life\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prolong that life<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had expected that we might see a link between how happy people felt over the day and their future mortality, but we were struck by how strong the effect was,&#8221; says UCL psychology professor Andrew Steptoe, the lead author of a major study on the topic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/wellness\/travelling-alone-stress-less\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solo travel gets rid of a major stressor<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>When we drill it down further, we see that autonomy is a key proponent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/bouncing-back\/201106\/the-no-1-contributor-happiness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said happiness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This makes sense when you think about it. Of course, we are all happier when we have a sense of control over our lives; whether that&#8217;s determining how we live or having freedom to perform our jobs properly (rather than being micro-managed).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12229\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/eating-out-alone.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And &#8211; you guessed it &#8211;\u00a0single people enjoy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/019251398019006001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greater autonomy and personal growth<\/a>\u00a0than their married counterparts, according to research.<\/p>\n<p>This autonomy is particularly important to women, who &#8211; historically and culturally &#8211; have seen their independence curtailed via marriage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve always been a very, very independent person,&#8221; says skincare entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/relationships\/women-happier-single-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Linda Rodin<\/a>. &#8220;I loved being in relationships with wonderful and really interesting men. I just never felt the need to marry them. I never felt convinced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roll on, resilience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13549\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Flash-Pack-general-2.jpg\" alt=\"being single\" width=\"2800\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another level at play here, too: resilience.<\/p>\n<p>Some experts are now coining resilience as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/solo-travel-secret-fulfilment-resilience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the new happiness<\/a>, because it&#8217;s solid, long-lasting and teaches us to bounce back (unlike happiness itself, which can be fleeting).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/destination-guides\/solo-travel-guide-japan\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why Japan is a dream destination for solo travellers<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re drawn to identity-markers and to groups that help us define [ourselves]. In the simplest terms, this means using others to fill out our identities, rather than relying on something internal, something that comes from within,&#8221; says\u00a0psychoanalytic theorist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2017\/03\/the-virtues-of-isolation\/521100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Bowker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13550\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/bungee-jump-whistler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to have that capacity: the ability to know that you\u2019re gonna survive, that you\u2019re gonna be okay if you\u2019re not supported by this group.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When you live single, you&#8217;re more likely to cultivate this key element of grit and self-reliance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A brave new world<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/jordan-adventure-holiday-for-solo-travellers-aged-30-40\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13551 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Jordan-for-solo-travellers-with-Flash-Pack-081.jpg\" alt=\"People riding camels in Jordan\" width=\"1800\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All of this is not to say that marriage is bad. You can be married and over-the-moon happy.
