{"id":13216,"date":"2018-05-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashpack.preview.uk.com\/2018\/05\/08\/all-hail-sweden-the-worlds-single-living-capital\/"},"modified":"2023-07-31T11:49:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T10:49:05","slug":"sweden-solo-living-single","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox.flashpack.com\/us\/solo\/relationships\/sweden-solo-living-single\/","title":{"rendered":"All hail Sweden, the world&#8217;s single living capital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you relish being single, you&#8217;ll find strength in numbers in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>Our Nordic neighbour has more\u00a0solo dwellers than anywhere else in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Around 47% of households have just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2012\/mar\/30\/the-rise-of-solo-living\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one occupant<\/a> &#8211; typically a child-free, single adult.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, living alone doesn&#8217;t always mean being single.\u00a0Some solo dwellers may be in long-term relationships. Many more will be dating.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"\/insights\/2017\/11\/15\/women-happier-single-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why women revel in the ritual of being single<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But such a\u00a0 definitive figure (compared to 34% in the UK and 27% in the States) shouts volumes about the normalisation of being single in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13231\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Photo-by-Patrick-Perkins-on-Unsplash-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a country where singledom is so common, a particular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20180412\/why-do-so-many-swedes-live-alone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">genre of apartment<\/a> &#8211; think white walls, compact space and Ikea-led minimalism &#8211; has become a byword for solo living.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no stigma around being single here, just as there&#8217;s no <a href=\"https:\/\/culturalatlas.sbs.com.au\/swedish-culture\/family-949aa0a2-a468-4b53-b7d7-a88689bab4d8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taboo around divorce<\/a> or having <a href=\"https:\/\/sweden.se\/society\/meet-the-average-anderssons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kids outside marriage<\/a>. Individual freedom is king.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Valuing the individual\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13230\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/woman-single-stockholm-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Freedom of the individual is a core value of all Scandinavian countries, driving right to the heart of its collective national identity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Sweden, we are more individualistic and have more rational, secular values than in any other country on earth,&#8221; explains Patrik Lindenfors, a professor of cultural evolution studies at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20160719\/sweden-is-the-most-extreme-country-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stockholm University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/relationships\/friendship\/find-people-to-travel-with-in-your-30s-and-40s-with-flash-pack\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Being single makes you a brilliant traveller<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This ethos means it&#8217;s easier for people to live as they choose without judgement. But it also intrinsically changes the nature of romantic relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Swedish theory of love&#8221; decrees that &#8220;authentic human relationships are possible only between autonomous and equal individuals&#8221;,\u00a0says\u00a0 Swedish historian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2012\/feb\/10\/swedish-model-big-society-david-cameron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lars Tr\u00e4g\u00e5rdh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is, of course, shocking news to many non-Swedes, who believe that interdependency is the very stuff of love,&#8221; he notes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13232\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/sweden-living-single-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Without reliance playing into the equation, the decision to settle down in Scandinavian countries becomes one where individual choice and freedom hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"\/insights\/2017\/04\/03\/my-experiences-of-solo-travel-as-a-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;How I learnt to embrace solo travel as a man&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or as Berthe Linddal Hansen, a researcher at the Copenhagen Institute of Future Studies, puts it: &#8220;You have your destiny in your own hands and can do anything you want.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But if you have a family you have to give up the ski holiday together with the guys. Or you have to give up the chance for continuing your education, or running in the marathon, because you have to spend time with the family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A state that picks up the pieces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13233\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/crowds-sweden-single-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"695\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another reason why being single is so widespread in Sweden is that the state uses a high-tax\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2008\/nov\/16\/sweden-tax-burden-welfare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">welfare system<\/a>\u00a0to fuel its egalitarian vision: people can afford to live independently.<\/p>\n<p>From generous <a href=\"https:\/\/sweden.se\/society\/meet-the-average-anderssons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unemployment provision<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-21784716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subsidised childcare<\/a> and free <a href=\"https:\/\/sweden.se\/society\/higher-education-and-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">university tuition<\/a>,\u00a0Swedes benefit from a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/culturalatlas.sbs.com.au\/swedish-culture\/core-concepts-ee215e94-c137-472b-883c-c46e11331b5e#core-concepts-ee215e94-c137-472b-883c-c46e11331b5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;cradle-to-coffin&#8221;<\/a> cycle that offers support at every life stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/wellness\/travelling-alone-stress-less\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How solo travel gets rid of a major stress trigger<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The simple upshot here is that more people choose to live single simply because they *can*. Not only is individual freedom an ideological value, it&#8217;s one that is rooted in practical reality.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13225 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/man-alone-Sweden.jpg\" alt=\"single living\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no coincidence that Sweden has one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/articles\/2018-01-08\/divorce-day-the-european-countries-with-the-highest-divorce-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the highest<\/a>\u00a0divorce rates in the world. The <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Marriages_and_births_in_Sweden&amp;oldid=268227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">average age<\/a> for a first marriage is also relatively high; 33 years for women and 35.7 for men (compared to 27 for women and 29 for men in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/sexes\/archive\/2013\/03\/getting-married-later-is-great-for-college-educated-women\/274040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the States<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Sweden, a high-trust society, the state is viewed more as friend than foe,&#8221; says Tr\u00e4g\u00e5rdh.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, it is welcomed as a liberator from traditional, unequal forms of community&#8230;\u00a0our institutions guarantee the possibility for relationships to be voluntary, for individuals to make the decision to leave a relationship if they so wish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the state is your friend &#8211; and a giving and fair-minded pal, at that &#8211; you have less call for a partner.<\/p>\n<p>And if things don&#8217;t work out in a relationship, there&#8217;s a ready-made support network in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Re-writing the rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13236\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Sweden-happiness-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sweden is at the forefront of this global movement towards a new kind of individual identity; one that is no longer rooted in whether or not you&#8217;re married, or how many kids you have.<\/p>\n<p>Stripped of the financial or emotional reliance that a marriage so often &#8211; even now &#8211; represents, Swedes are choosing to live as they like.<\/p>\n<p>And nearly 50% of the time, that means flying solo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/solo-travel-tips\/best-places-travel-solo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Three great places for solo travel in 2018<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In typical Swedish fashion, there are no particular rules on how this is done.<\/p>\n<p>Living single doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean living alone, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Communal living is fast becoming a thing in Sweden, as single people <a href=\"https:\/\/sverigesradio.se\/sida\/artikel.aspx?programid=2054&amp;artikel=5615244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live alone together<\/a>\u00a0in independent flats, with shared gardens and dining areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13235 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Sweden-Stockholm-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"The rainbow buildings of Gamla Stan in Stockholm\" width=\"1000\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a free-wheeling world like this, even the mere concept of dating can feel a little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20141110\/five-tips-for-dating-in-sweden-si\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">too loaded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People don\u2019t like to say they\u2019re &#8216;dating&#8217; in Sweden,&#8221; one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/capital\/story\/20161005-this-might-be-the-loneliest-country-for-expats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swedish resident<\/a> observes. &#8220;There\u2019s a huge amount of pressure that is tied to the word.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"\/insights\/2017\/11\/07\/stop-dating-connect-people-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forget dating and just connect with people<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Instead, couples typically head out for &#8220;fika&#8221; coffee and cake (the bill is split, naturally) and if they like each other, great.
