Top places to visit in Guatemala
Antigua
Formerly the seat of Spanish power in the region, Antigua served as a cultural, economic and religious hub for more than 200 years before the city was largely destroyed by earthquakes in the 17th century. Many of the colonial buildings have now been rebuilt or restored. As well as a rich history, Antigua has a lively cultural scene of music and festivals, while the centre is packed with excellent restaurants and bars.
Lake Atitlán
This spellbinding lake is surrounded by beautiful traditional villages that you could spend an age exploring, but it’s the lake itself that draws in travellers again and again. The lake’s aquamarine surface is frequented by rustic fishing boats, plying their trade in the water’s depths. Here, lush green hill dot the landscape, while the volcanoes are ever looming in the distance.
Reserva Natural Atitlán
This natural reserve is a former coffee plantation that has been slowly reclaimed by nature. A slow walk through the reserve takes you over a swing bridge, past a waterfall and over to a viewing platform where you can see spider monkeys in their natural habitat. Keep your eyes open for other animals too, coatis and hummingbirds abound in this natural paradise.
Tikal National Park
Tikal National Park is home to an ancient Mayan citadel and is located in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. This park contains 575 square kilometres of jungle and thousands of ruined structures that leave clues as to the extraordinary nature of this ancient Mayan civilisation, so there’s plenty to explore.
